Rockdale Pottery Lamp 1991 Back View with Mark Only-3264 x 2448-jpg.JPGThis handsome lamp was hand made of salt glazed grey stoneware by the Rockdale Union Stoneware Company in Edgerton, Wisconsin in 1991. The cobalt designs were hand painted; the flower on the back was initialed by the artist with a "W." The lamp weighs nearly 7 pounds; the crock base is 9 1/2 inches tall with a 5 inch diameter bottom. The overall height with the shade is 20 inches to the top of the small round brass finial. The lamp works fine and the cord, plug and bulb socket are all in very good condition.

The shade is made of pleated blue fabric over a stiff plastic liner. The harp is attached to the shade, which would necessitate buying a new harp if you want to change the shade, which is probably the original. It's in very good condition on the exterior. It has a few splits in the plastic lining, not at all noticeable from the outside. The crock is in excellent condition; it's marked on the reverse with the impressed oval mark of the pottery, which reads: ROCKDALE UNION STONEWARE EDGERTON, WIS. ALWAYS HANDMADE 1991, all in an oval. Below that is a much smaller oval that has the potter's mark---what looks like a capital letter V with a bar across the top, or perhaps a letter T with two legs.

The founder of Rockdale Union Stoneware, Peter Jackson, worked at Rowe Pottery in Cambridge, Wisconsin. RUS was also located in Cambridge from 1984 to 1991 and then in Edgerton from 1991 until it closed in 1997.

This is a beautiful lamp that works well in casual, relaxed rooms.
